Classic shortbread recipe
Shortbread is a classic, buttery cookie with a rich, crumbly texture that melts in your mouth. Originally from Scotland, it’s made with just three simple ingredients: butter, sugar, and flour, which let its natural flavor shine.
With its golden color and slightly crisp edges, shortbread can be enjoyed plain, dipped in chocolate, or flavored with a hint of vanilla or lemon zest.
Whether cut into fingers, wedges, or rounds, it’s a versatile treat that pairs perfectly with tea or coffee, making it a favorite for holidays, special occasions, or everyday snacks.
Ingredients
- - 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- - 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- - 1/4 teaspoon salt
- - 2 cups all-purpose flour
- - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
Mix in the salt and vanilla extract (if using).
Gradually add the flour, mixing until just combined. The dough should be soft and crumbly.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently until it comes together.
Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use a cookie cutter or knife to cut the dough into desired shapes.
Place the shortbread shapes onto the prepared baking sheet.
Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are just starting to turn golden. Be careful not to overbake.
Allow the shortbread to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
